How To Get A Holiday Job

From Forbes.com

With the unemployment rate at 7.8% and 4.8 million job seekers out of work for at least 27 weeks, many people are turning to that staple of seasonal employment, the Christmas holiday job. Though retailers are not forecasting a record-setting holiday season, they do expect gains from last year, and many companies are planning to hire seasonal workers to handle the increased demand.

According to John Challenger, chief executive of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, the Chicago-based outplacement firm that tracks job-cut and hiring announcements, holiday hiring will gain this year over 2011. Last year, seasonal hiring rose just 1.9% over the previous year. But this year will be stronger, predicts Challenger. “Nobody thinks it’s going to be a blockbuster year but I think generally, retailers feel that the season is going to be better,” he says.

A recent survey by management consultants, the Hay Group, underlines that trend. In a poll of 14 ... Read the entire article.

Secrets To Paying For College - Cutting Tuition Costs

From Money.CNN.com

You knew it was bad, but now that your child is close or getting ready to go to college, you're starting to get a truer picture of how bad. This year's estimated $22,300 total price (including tuition, room, board, books, and fees) for the average public college takes nearly a third of the annual income of a typical family with college-aged kids.

That's up from 15% a generation ago. At private colleges, the average asking price of $43,500 is equal to about 60% of that family's pay, vs. 33% about 20 years ago.

Ah, but you probably have a plan. Hoping your brainiac kid will get a nice scholarship to defray those costs?  Sorry, those awards typically knock the price down only by a ... Read the entire article.

When Should Seniors Stop Driving?

How to Approach Older Adults With Concerns About Their Driving

Initiating a dialogue about senior driving concerns

If you have concerns about an older adult's ability to drive, addressing them promptly could be a matter of life and death. It may be tempting to procrastinate -- to talk to him next week or before the first snowfall, for example -- but think how you'd feel if the delay led to an automobile accident that resulted in a serious injury or death.

Considering the possible consequences should help you overcome your hesitation -- but that doesn't mean it will be easy. It's awkward and painful to have to inform older adults that they aren't capable of doing something as basic and essential as driving the car. For them, it's another ... Read the entire article.

Your Digital Estate: What Happens When You Die?

When you die, your physical estate — your home, stocks, bonds and money — go to the heirs you named in your will. If you don't have a will, state laws will govern what happens to your assets. You can make those data, and the memories that come with them, available to your heirs with a little preparation.

Your online activity: Memorialize or delete?

Tips On Interpreting Job Postings

Job postings are available in many formats and if you are not careful, you may eliminate yourself as a possible applicant by not interpreting the job posting for what it really conveys.
This career article offers four tips on finding the deeper meaning of job advertisements. Learning how to interpret these four components of job postings is the first step to successfully applying for them:

1. Experience Required
2. Salary Required
3. Organizational Skills Required
4. Proficieny Required

1. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The single most common requirement stated in job advertisements is experience. Some positions require no experience at all, while others might require 1-2 years of experience, while the most senior positions might require 10 or more years of experience! These numbers can be very intimidating, but the right approach can make a difference. When thinking about the experience required by a job, consider these options:

1. Work experience is NOT just typical jobs. Internships, volunteer work, and clubs are all valid forms of experience. Any learning opportunity is considered work experience.

2. Tailor your resume to fit the job description. If an advertisement says that a position requires 3 years of experience in sales, make sure your resume highlights ... Read the entire article.

Ten Ways To Tell If Someone Is Lying To You

From Forbes.com

In business, politics and romance, it would be nice to know when we’re being lied to. Unfortunately humans aren’t very good at detecting lies. Our natural tendency is to trust others, and for day-to-day, low-stakes interactions, that makes sense. We save time and energy by taking statements like “I saw that movie” or “I like your haircut” at face value.

But while it would be too much work to analyze every interaction for signs of deception, there are times when we really need to know if we’re getting the straight story. Maybe a crucial negotiation depends on knowing the truth, or we’ve been lied to and want to find out if it’s part of a pattern.

In fact, being able to distinguish lies from truth is important not just ... Read the entire article.

Fix Fixed Expenses - Budgeting, Savings Challenge

From AARP

We've all heard the old saying, "Nothing is certain but death and taxes." Although when you stop to think about it, I suppose most of us would add "monthly bills" to that list.

So-called fixed expenses - those items in our household budgets that we consider unavoidable and non-negotiable - typically account for a big chunk of what we spend every month. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's annual Consumer Expenditure Survey, about two-thirds of the average American family's household spending is for basic necessities, as opposed to discretionary expenses. Between rent or mortgage payments, insurance, utilities, phone bills, car payments and more, most folks can relate to the lyrics of that popular country song: There's just too much month at the end of the money.
--But maybe at least some of our fixed expenses aren't as fixed ... Read the entire article.
