Looking For Free Checking?

Once a standard thing, it's now hard to find, like a cassette player in a department store. Recent research found that the number of banks offering free checking is down 11% from a year ago, but you've got options if your bank charges:

Internet banks - with lower overhead costs, online banks offer a lot of free perks and free checking is one of them. Make sure you use an FDIC insured option. INGDirect is a great one.

Credit unions - since they are non-profit and established to benefit the members (account holders) rather than shareholders, you'll find a lot of them still offering free checking.
